Official Name of the Nation:
Republic of Jouran
Leader(s):
Prime Minister De Witt:
Age: 64
A well known and populist leader within the NDP, Adrian De Witt was elected on the promise of boosting the industrial capacity of Jouran and defusing tense relations with Kylvania. The PM took part in the Battle of Calvio as a young conscript where he was awarded the Medal of Valor for bravery in holding his machine gun post against a Kylvanian bayonet charge. He was re-elected for another six year term with over 65% of the vote.
Foreign Minister Joran Navis:
Age: 56
FM Joran Navis is a member of the People's Republican Party and unlike De Witt is far more inclined to distrust Kylvania. He is widely touted to be De Witt's opponent in the next election cycle if he stands again, and is a well known nationalist. He rejects any attempts to return Karelia to Kylvania and is wary of any rapprochement with Jouran's longtime enemy.
Field Marshal Theodore Von Bach:
Age: 50
Something of a rarity within the General Staff (even more so because he hails from Karelia), Von Bach rose through the ranks through a combination of raw talent and family connections to attain the rank of Field Marshal by 50. He is an advocate of new types of warfare that will break the static defenses of the past. While his theories have been called unconventional and ridiculous by some they are slowly gaining ground within the Ministry of Defense.

From a military standpoint, the Jouran National Army or JNA is not a large standing army. But for the past thirty years, it hasn't relied on a professional army to keep its borders safe. Instead, the JNA has been able to efficiently (and ruthlessly) at times called up thousands upon thousands of conscript troops during war time, keeping its professional soldiers as an elite core that can quickly take advantage of breakthrough's in enemy lines. Every Jouran male citizen from 18 to 45 is required to register for conscript duty. It is this vast pool of manpower that has kept its borders safe. But some within the military brass are looking towards modernization. The aircraft and the armored experiment known as 'tanks' are fast becoming attractive if unconventional topics of conversation within the Jouran High Command. The JNA are most known for there dark, drab gray uniforms and typical steel helms. They are armed with KAR-58 Bolt Action Rifles and put emphasis on wars of attrition to wear down their opponents to grind them down with artillery and infantry assaults before launching the final attack when on the offensive. When on the defensive, they are quick to build defensive trenches and allow the enemy to break themselves on their fortified positions. A prime example of this was during the Battle of Calvio. A four month stalemate that resulted in thousands of Kylvanian casualties as they tried to breakthrough well entrenched JNA troops.
History:
1720:
Principality of Jouran declares independence from the Kingdom of Ezria, thus initiating the Jouran War of Independence.
1721:
One of the earliest democracies is formed when the 'electorate' is founded which will later become the basis for its Parliament. Originally, it consists of 61 seats from only the most wealthy families.
1727:
The war with Ezria comes to an end, guaranteeing Jouran independence. The next three decades will see Ezrian territory slowly annexed by the Republic of Jouran.
1755:
The first 'Frontier War' is fought between Jouran and Kylvania over the present day province of Karelia, over Kylvanian encroachments into Jouran territory and the rich mineral resources of Karelia.
1758:
The First Peace of Arracourt is signed, leading to the ceding of Karelia to the Republic of Jouran.
1820:
Mass protests are formed over the stranglehold of the 'elite' Electors over the democratic process. The widespread unrest is so chaotic that voting rights are extended to all male Jouran citizens. The Electorate is disbanded and replaced by a Parliament.
1862:
The National Democratic Party and the People's Republican Party are formed, they remain the nation's two largest parties in Parliament to this day.
1891:
The Second Jouran-Kylvanian War begins when the Kylvanian Army launches an offensive to reclaim the province of Karelia. The first Battle of Calvio alone results in thousands of casualties for both sides, the war eventually ends with the expulsion of all Kylvanian troops from Jouran territory.
1920:
Prime Minister De Witt of the NDP wins re-election on the platform of rebuilding Jourland's economic prosperity and of mending relations with Kylvania in the interest of trade and other mutual benefits. Ironically, De Witt fought at the Battle of Calvio as a young infantryman.
